Denying water

Israel restricts Palestinian access to water.

  • Israel controls 85% of water resources in the occupied West Bank. This means Palestinians do not get enough water.

  • In Gaza over 97% of water is unfit for human consumption. As a result more than 50% of Gaza's children suffer from water-related infections.

  • On average an Israeli consumes 300 litres of water per day compared to only 87 litres per day for a Palestinian.

A deeper dive.

Palestinians suffer from a shortage of clean and safe water every day under Israeli apartheid.

Israel has seized control of nearly all water resources.

Israel has confiscated Palestinian land near water sources and banned Palestinians from constructing new water installations without a military permit. Many Palestinian homes are not connected to the water network.

To make matters worse, Israeli state-owned water company Mekorot forces Palestinians to buy back their stolen water at exorbitant prices.

In contrast, Israeli settlers living in illegal Israeli settlements on stolen Palestinian land enjoy an abundance of water. Each year they discharge millions of cubic metres of sewage onto Palestinian agricultural land.

In Gaza there is a water infrastructure crisis. A staggering 96% of water is unfit for human consumption.

Israel targets wells and essential water pipelines in its frequent bombardments of the besieged Gaza Strip. On top of this, due to the Israeli blockade, there is a shortage of pipes, building materials, fuel and electricity. This means water in Gaza is often mixed with sewage.

This has a direct impact on the health of Palestinians, particularly children. 50% of children in Gaza suffer from water-related infections, and 12% of infant and child deaths are linked to intestinal infections related to contaminated water.
