Education

Education of Palestinian children is restricted by checkpoints, the Apartheid Wall, Israeli settler abuse and lack of funding.

  • In Hebron some Palestinian children have to pass through two checkpoints to get to school.

  • In Gaza children are forced to study in dark classrooms due to lack of electricity.

  • In May 2021 Israeli attacks damaged 331 school facilities in Gaza.

A deeper dive.

Palestinian children’s education is severely disrupted by Israel’s illegal occupation and apartheid regime. 40% of Palestinian children are not enrolled in secondary education.

Israeli settlers and Israeli Occupation Forces frequently attack Palestinian children on their ways to and from school. This means journeys to and from school are fraught with danger. In the first 6 months of 2021 Israeli settlers injured 24 Palestinian children.

In the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, education is restricted by checkpoints and the Apartheid Wall. There are more than 700 checkpoints and roadblocks, so short journeys to and from school can instead take hours.

In one area of Hebron 88% of children have to pass through a military checkpoint to get to school.

In Masafer Yatta 500 Palestinian children face forced expulsion from their homes. To make matters worse, Israeli Occupation Forces regularly detain teachers and school buildings are at imminent threat of demolition.

In Gaza repeated Israeli bombardments have significantly reduced the number of school facilities. In May 2021 Israel damaged more than 300 school facilities in Gaza. 2 out of 3 schools now operate on double or triple shifts. Children are forced to study in dark classrooms due to lack of electricity and sometimes entire families have to live in classrooms when Israel destroys their homes.
