London workshops show incredible student energy for Palestine - 18th Aug, 2023

Two recent workshops have shown the strength of the student movement for Palestine at colleges and universities across London.

Organised by FOA as part of the #GenerationPalestine movement, the workshops explored Palestine past and present, as well as how to effectively campaign for freedom, justice and equality for Palestine on college and university campuses.

The sessions explored Palestinian history, emphasising Palestine’s long-standing heritage and culture, with a particular focus on the ongoing Nakba – now in its 75th year. Students were also encouraged to reflect on their own lives and think about the challenges faced by Palestinian youths like themselves on a daily basis.

The first workshop at UCL’s Institute of Education brought together students headed to university this September. Incoming Presidents and Vice Presidents of Palestine societies attended, as well as students passionate about Palestinian rights and determined to increase their activism on campus this year.

“Today went really well” said Iman from Greenwich University. “I’d really recommend it if you’re looking to learn more about Palestine. It helped us out so much with explaining the history, telling us about resources and ideas for the upcoming year. Definitely attend one of these if you want to learn more about Palestine and start your activism journey!”

The second workshop in Tower Hamlets was attended by GCSE and college students, who were equally enthusiastic about standing up against Israeli injustice. It culminated with a mini protest and leafletting on Brick Lane and Whitechapel market, demonstrating the students’ unwavering commitment to the cause.

A highlight of both workshops was the campaigns session led by FOA’s Head of Public Affairs Shamiul Joarder. With energy and expertise, Joarder explained how to effectively campaign for justice and discussed the challenges faced by students on college and university campuses.

These invigorating workshops highlighted the incredible dedication of young people to Palestinian freedom. The determination and energy was inspiring. As students keep up this hard work, the goal of justice, equality and freedom for Palestine becomes more attainable.
