Apartheid wall

The Apartheid Wall surrounds the occupied West Bank, separating Palestinians from their schools, hospitals, farms and family.

  • At some points it is 8 metres high, the same as two stacked double-decker busses.

  • In 2004 the International Court of Justice said that the Apartheid Wall is illegal and should be demolished. But Israel has continued to build it.

  • When finished the Apartheid Wall will be over 700km long. That’s the distance from London to Denmark.

A deeper dive.

Israel is building an Apartheid Wall, which cuts deep into the occupied West Bank and separates Palestinian towns from one another. It reduces the freedom of movement of Palestinians and severely damages Palestinian agriculture, towns and villages.

Around 300,000 Palestinians have been cut off from their communities by the Apartheid Wall.

The entire town of Qalqilya is surrounded by the Wall. Entry and exit is now via a checkpoint which can be closed by Israel at any time without notice.

The Wall runs around illegal Israeli settlements in East Jerusalem and cuts East Jerusalem off from the rest of the occupied West Bank. This makes it almost impossible for Palestinians in East Jerusalem to travel to other parts of occupied Palestine to see friends and family.

The Wall is up to 8 metres high in places and will be over 700km in length when finally completed - that’s the distance from London to Denmark.

In 2004 the International Court of Justice ruled that Israel’s Apartheid Wall was ‘contrary to international law’ and therefore illegal. It called on Israel to ‘cease forthwith the works of construction of the Wall’. Israel has continued to construct the Apartheid Wall, in flagrant violation of this ruling.
