Since the tragic murder of three children in Southport on Monday 29 July, misinformation and instigation has led to a swathe of far-right violence across the UK against Muslims and other racialised communities.
We have seen horrific images of mosques being attacked, Black and brown-owned businesses being damaged, libraries and hotels housing asylum seekers being burned and gangs of fascists indiscriminately assaulting people of colour.
Meanwhile, the media is using “two-sides” rhetoric to cover these events, portraying it as clashes between opposing groups. Politicians continue to concede to this far-right violence by refusing to acknowledge its racist and Islamophobic roots, instead describing it as “violent thuggery”, and citing their “understandable fears” around immigration.
We want to make it clear to our MPs that it is their responsibility to use their platform in Parliament, on social media and in the media to explicitly label this violence as Islamophobic and racist. They must stop appeasing the far-right and challenge the racist, anti-immigration and Islamophobic narratives that have been normalised in Parliament and the media.
