Palestinians have lived in East Jerusalem for centuries. For many, their houses have been handed down from generation to generation. Israel occupied East Jerusalem during the Six Day War of 1967, and has taken more and more land from Palestinians ever since.
In May 2021, the struggles of Sheikh Jarrah in East Jerusalem made the headlines. #SaveSheikhJarrah is no longer trending, but the struggle continues. In November 2021, the families of Sheikh Jarrah said no to a ‘compromise’ by Israel that their homes be demolished in 15 years. It is imperative that we continue to campaign to #SaveJerusalem.
An illegal Israeli settlement is the establishment of an Israeli community on Palestinian land. This is prohibited under Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, which states that ‘the Occupying Power shall not deport or transfer parts of its own civilian population into the territory it occupies’.
In March 2021, there were around 220,000 Israeli settlers living illegally in East Jerusalem. Across the West Bank and East Jerusalem, there are around 620,000 Israeli settlers living in over 200 illegal Israeli settlements.

For decades, Israel has stolen more and more land from Palestinians in Jerusalem, even though Palestinians have lived here for generations. One of Israel’s main methods is the demolition of Palestinian homes to make way for illegal Israeli settlements.
Right now the homes of thousands of Palestinians in East Jerusalem are under threat.
In the al-Bustan area of Silwan in East Jerusalem, over 1500 Palestinians face unlawful home demolitions.
In May 2021 the struggles of families in Sheikh Jarrah in East Jerusalem made international headlines. #SaveSheikhJarrah is no longer trending, but the struggle continues. In November 2021, the families of Sheikh Jarrah said no to a ‘compromise’ by Israel that their homes be demolished in 15 years.
Israel has destroyed over 1000 Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem since 2004. Sometimes Palestinians are even forced to demolish their own homes. 17-year-old Ali Burqan was killed whilst helping his neighbours demolish their home in East Jerusalem in August 2021.
Israel’s demolition of Palestinian homes to make way for illegal Israeli settlements is illegal under international law and must stop. Take action now to #SaveJerusalem.
